Whole-home air filtration and purification

The best upgrade for most homes is a 4–5 inch media filter cabinet with a MERV 11–13 filter. It captures fine dust and much of the smoke without choking airflow the way a thin high-MERV filter can. Electronic and polarized-media air cleaners are options for allergies.

Indoor air problems vary by region: wildfire smoke across the West, desert dust in the Southwest, heavy pollen in the Southeast, and winter inversions in mountain valleys. All of them bring fine particles indoors.

Thin 1-inch MERV 13 filters can restrict airflow on systems that weren't designed for them. A media cabinet gives much more filter area.

FAQ

Air Filtration & Purifiers questions

What MERV filter should I use?+

MERV 8 is a sound baseline. MERV 11–13 captures smoke and fine dust better, but use it in a deep media cabinet or confirm your system's airflow can handle it.
